How to Use Note Cards for a Speech (Without Reading From Them)

By the TalkSpeechy Team

Use note cards for a speech as prompts, not scripts: write short key phrases, number the cards, hold them at chest height, and glance down only to find your next line. If you can say the point without reading it, it belongs on the card as one or two words.

What should you put on a speech note card?

Write the first sentence of your speech in full, the last sentence in full, and short bullet phrases for everything in between. Also add any exact quotes, names, numbers, or dates you might forget. Everything else should be a keyword that reminds you of a story or point.

Example: instead of writing a whole story, write "Ohio gas station — 2 a.m. — map upside down." That is enough to trigger the story.

How many cards do you need?

For a three-minute speech, two to four cards is plenty. Use one idea per card so you can turn them over without losing your place. Number every card in the top corner in case you drop them, and punch a hole in the corner with a ring if you want them held together.

How do you hold and use them?

Should you use cards, paper, or your phone?

Cards are best: they are light, quiet, and easy to hold. Full pages tend to shake and hide your face. Phones can be fine, but screens glow, lock, and buzz, and it is easy to look at your phone instead of the room. If you use a phone, turn it to airplane mode and increase the font size.

How do you practice with note cards?

Practice out loud at least four or five times, using the same cards and the same standing position you will use on the day. On each run, look at the card less. By the last run, you should be glancing at it only for transitions. This is what makes a speech sound natural instead of read.
